Description
Kenan Rubenstein’s Tick is a story of a young man, who at the start of the new year is fed up with his life. In a fit of rage, he tears all of the drawings he’s created and photographs he’s taken. His torn calendar catches his eye, an ominous skull and crossbones lay just four months away in April.
Inspired by children creating a snowman, the young man builds himself a clock-work friend. He teaches his invention how to live life, and for a few months they enjoy their time together. April finally arrives and tragedy strikes, and the clock-work friend must work to rebuild the young man’s life.
Tick is about rebirth, hoping that the start of a new year will automatically bring a change is revealed as a false hope. It is only through doing that our characters can create a better version of themselves. Taking place over the course of a year, Kenan’s detailed black and white drawings spill over a comic laid out like a calendar. It is a quiet, story full of small moments that encourage you to linger over each page.
