Smuggling Books Across The Border chronicles moments in Leila Abdelrazaq’s trip to the 2015 Palestine Festival of Literature. Rather than telling a linear story, these illustrations evoke a range of emotions surrounding traveling through occupied land.

Leila’s drawings are highly suggestive of specific feelings -paranoia, apprehension, indignation, danger, hope, and home- but since they lack much detailed context, they can also be open to interpretation. Part sketchbook, part travelogue, part comic, Smuggling Books Across the Border is a quick read, but it will linger with you for a long time.
