I hate lists of graphic novels you have to read before you die, but if I made one, including Sarah Becan’s Shuteye would be a no-brainer. In six stories about slumber, Sarah crafts creepy tales in which reality is fleeting, and perception and perspectives can turn on a dime.
Originally published as a series of minicomics, the stories are linked by the concluding and opening shots of each story. At the end of each story, a character falls asleep, and wakes up in the next as a different person. And within these dreams, characters dream, hallucinate, and are confronted with very unreal realities. Readers are confronted with vaguely familiar characters, have we met them before? Wasn’t that the guy from that other story?
This book is a magnificent accomplishment in complex storytelling. It leaves more questions than answers, and makes you want to explore the worlds it creates in your own dreams.
