Description

Powdered Milk collects issues 1 -5, 7 and 8 of Keiler Roberts’ autobiographical minicomic series of the same name.

In this collection, Keiler tells stories about growing up, and how memories can be clouded by one’s mood, and how one’s mood can be affected by one’s memories. Keiler then becomes pregnant, which is exciting for her, because she wants to be a mom, but is also terrifying, because she has already suffered from a miscarriage of a previous pregnancy. Ultimately Xia is born, and Keiler’s life, and the format of her comics change.

Powdered Milk is full of dry humor as Keiler, her husband Scott, and her extended family move through midwestern life. There is also a great deal of weight in the stories, always lurking in these vignettes is Keiler’s bipolar disorder and depression.

The matter-of-fact humor and drama of Keiler’s comics are reflected in her naturalistic drawings that almost look like paper dolls, or airline emergency procedure drawings. Powdered Milk is a captivating read from beginning to end.

“Everything about her work eschews fussiness and frills, leaving only the meat of her sharp observations about herself and others…”
