The first issue of Reid Psaltis’ one-artist anthology, Misnomer collects two now-out-of-print minicomics, “Carry On, Carrion: A Crow Funeral” and “The Malaise Trap.”
In “Carry On, Carrion: A Crow Funeral” Cornelius the crow is killed by whiskers the cat. His crow friends and family come to pay his respects. What follows is a hilarious and smart blending of both crow and human idiocsynrasies. A roadkill buffet at the wake, a drunk uncle we worry might end up smacking into a window, you know, all the things you’ll find at a crow funeral.
“The Malaise Trap,” written by Jack Bracken and illustrated by Reid is a far more sober comic about obsession and identity. The narrator has spent his entire life collecting comics, stamps, baseball cards -anything that could be collected really- to the point of abandoning personal relationships and dumping all of his money into objects that will outlast him. His obsession finally gets the better of him, and he realizes he needs to get rid of his collections, but instead of turning a new leaf, and walking away from collecting, his addiction goes through a metamorphosis.
This issue of Misnomer features early works by Reid, and while his drawing style may be simpler than what he’s making now, it’s no less impressive in his dark brushy style. Between the two stories, we’re treated to a pin-up gallery with drawings inspired by the two comics by Michael Manomivibul, Farel Dalrymple, Abby Diamond, Angela Rizza, François Vigneault, and Ezra Butt.
