Description
June 4th, 2020 is an autobiographical comic about Isabella Rotman’s birthday. She started the day off visiting fellow cartoonist Marnie Galloway. This visit was a break in preparing to move from Chicago to Maine (temporarily at the time) to be closer to her family. June 4th, 2020 was also three months into the COVID-19 Pandemic, and days after the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis Police Officers.
In this short minicomic, Isabella captures a swell of emotions. Everyday life shut down by a highly contagious virus, Americans angry at continuous violence against Black people, celebrating a birthday, leaving one home for another, police retaliation against protests, visiting with good friends, the kindness of strangers looking out for each other. In juggling all of these feelings, Isabella shows the how personal global and national problems can feel, and how powerful intimate personal moments can be.
