Description
Issue four! Back for more! Herman the Manatee is on the run with his two friends, Lester the self-hating manatee and Knuckles, the narwhal who have just broken out of prison. Knuckles is the leader of the gang, confident, arrogant and greedy. Lester has usurped Herman’s character traits from the series’ early strips as the hopeless sad-sack pessimist, which has in turn made Herman the “straight man,” slightly more optimistic, though still naive, and easily manipulated.
This issue bounces between light-hearted comedy and dark humor effortlessly. Whenever I read Herman the Manatee, I wonder are Jason’s comics appropriate for kids? There’s nothing graphic, but sometimes the jokes get morbid. I’m sure my 10-year old self would have declared it the best comic around, though I’m not sure that answers my question.

“It’s not everybody who can make me rethink my “ongoing strips are generally just not funny” theory, and Jason did that in a big way.”
