Description
In Futile Comics No. 8, Mike Centeno presents a short story, The Future, that helps illustrate the human cost of political and financial precarity on families, and what conditions make people uproot their lives and flee their homes.
Professor Alberto Abellano and his wife Carola are professionals with a young daughter, living in Venezuela during the Maduro presidency. Carola has a job opportunity in Bogotá, which will allow the family to leave Venezuela, but Alberto has just been offered a the chair position in the Political Science department of his university. A weekend trip to Carola’s parent’s apartment on the beach and a visit with friends help put things into perspective.
Mike presents believable, complex, and sympathetic characters as they are faced with difficult decisions in a complicated situation. Natural dialogue, sharp timing, and a fluid cartooning style make for an enriching read.
