Dave Ortega’s grandmother, Consuelo Castañon Herrera was born during the Mexican Revolution. In Dias De Consuelo, Dave tells her family’s story.

In this issue, Consuelo’s Father flees to the United States with his parents, leaving Consuelo, her mother, Eva, and grandmother, Isabel to fend for themselves in a new city. Eva takes up tailoring, and Consuelo yearns to go to school like the other girls in town. But the country’s civil war has not subsided, and it continues to intrude on the small family’s fragile life!

Issue three continues to mix small intimate moments of family life, with life-changing shifts caused by the surrounding war. This combination draws us in as readers closer than most historical or biographical work does. Deeper still, in this issue, Dave introduces both himself and his grandmother in 2016 as characters, adding both of their narrative voices into the mix. We are now reading tiny moments in 1919, but also seeing Consuelo’s life in a longer context, leading all the way to our present day!
