Description

Three million years from now, the human race has hit an evolutionary dead end.  Technology has neutralized any adversities we may face that might advance our species.  Unsatisfied with the mediocrity of perfection, society decides to send genetically-engineered humans to the early 21st century, in order to alter the course of human events.  Geaza (63424) and Bisso’s (81550) bodies have been designed to excrete a chemical which will cause a mutation in humans, changing our society’s path.  But when a third time traveler from earth’s altered future finds Bisso and Geaza, their understanding of their role in human history begins to change.

Science fiction’s strength in putting a mirror up to society by asking “what if?” is demonstrated with subtle deftness in Ezra Claytan Daniels’ Changers.  This ambitious 2-part graphic novel keeps the question “what makes one human” front and center, while providing strong character development, humor, and sometimes panic. Bisso and Geaza integrate themselves easily into early 21st century life, but “Oscar” -the aqua-sapien from the future their evolutionary catalyst has created- is more awkward, and as time progresses, the question becomes, is this future man now more animal than human?

Every aspect of Daniels’ world is thoroughly realized, through conversation, telepathic flash-backs and cultural reports by Geaza, you become immersed in two possible futures, the one from which Bisso and Geaza come, and the one they will create.

Book one lays a very creepy and engaging foundation for the second, more challenging volume. This is a must-read for science fiction fans.
